Combining tradition and technology, Punjab’s Handicrafts Board has introduced digital jacquard looms to replicate intricate Phulkari embroidery designs. Artisans in Patiala and Amritsar can scan traditional hand-stitched patterns, digitize them, and reproduce them on fabric with high precision. While preserving artisan employment, the system generates faster output for wider distribution. Crafts cooperatives report increased orders from textile exporters and domestic boutiques. Revenue has increased by 35 percent, and youth engagement has improved. Training programs ensure skill transfers combining hand embroidery and digital editing. The project aims to digitize over 500 Phulkari designs to preserve cultural heritage sustainably.
