West Bengal Introduces Mobile Roti Kitchens to Support Flood Victims

In flood-prone regions of Murshidabad and Nadia, West Bengal’s Disaster Management Department has initiated solar-powered mobile rotikitchens. Mounted on battery trucks, the units prepare fresh rotis and lentil curries, serving up to 5,000 meals daily during relief operations. Kitchens run entirely on rooftop solar panels with propane backups. Integrated with disaster response teams, the rotating rotikitchens travel through relief camps and stranded village shelters. Disaster management officers have praised their operation speed and hygiene. In the last monsoon, mobile kitchens reduced food scarcity stress and prevented foodborne illness outbreaks. The plan is to increase deployment to 25 kitchen units during peak season.
